Here's a thought that's been bothering me for the longest time. Authoritarian communists, be they Soviet flavor or some other (Korean, Chinese, Cuban, whatever...) occupy the upper left corner of the compass. Now I know that the compass is just an illustration and doesn't really attempt to quantify political beliefs, but it would seem anarchists, many of whom express their beliefs as a rather extreme expression of left-libertarianism, are as distant from tankies as they are an-caps. Why do we sweat "unity" with tankies so much more than we do right libertarians?
I'm a former right libertarian, I'll admit that up front. In my highschool days, I was a very poorly informed communist, but I believed in "From each, to each" ardently. An uncle of mine (who later became a Super-Fundie Conspiracy Nut (tm), turned me on to radical right libertarianism by showing me the failures and abuses of the state. From there I found for myself the Non-Aggression Principle and Voluntaryism, which are the bedrock moral positions of the bottom right on the compass. Now, I can't gloss over the way many so-called right libertarian voices have descended into "race realism". I've even seen the phrase "anarcho-fascism" tossed about unironically in some circles. I'm not making any case for cuddling up with Stephan Molyneux, though I was a fan of his years ago before he started talking about anything other than central banking etc. However, I found my way here by developing a strong preference for co-operative business and collectivized production. I saw that they were superior to traditional capitalist systems but could grow up in the sort of utopia right-libertarians envision (even if capital would never let it happen). This grew until I realized I'd broken completely from capitalism in an ideological sense and started reading proper anarchists.
Why does there seem to be resistance in opening up this pipeline? Why aren't we looking for building relationships with the right-libs that disavow racism? Why are we letting the mis-characterization of leftist social theory, borne out by a thousand screen-shotted Tumblr and Twitter posts to be what explains ourselves to these people? Why not search for unity on things like the prison industrial complex, the military industrial complex, subsidies for coal and international shipping? Everything we would want for communities based on anarchist principles is compatible with the moral foundations of right libertarianism, and, in fact, might serve those ideals better than concepts like anarcho-capitalism. Why do we "combat" right libertarians by meming about how shitty they are rather than trying to invite them into a good faith dialog? Why are we more concerned with the opinion of someone who thinks Trotsky was an alright dude than we are a guy who still likes Ron Paul and reads a lot of Milton Friedman?
EDIT: I want to make very clear I'm not advocating for right libertarianism in any way. I'm just confused as to why we so often agonize about how authoritarian someone is before we can't get along with them without ever asking seriously asking the same question of capitalist libertarians being that anarchists are supposedly as anti-authoritatian as they are anti-capitalist.
